Outdoor Instructor Training Course - More Info
Our Location
The Adventure Centre is based in Tavistock, Devon, on the edge of Dartmoor National Park. Dartmoor and Bodmin Moor (in Cornwall) are regularly used for teaching navigation and climbing, complemented by trips to North Wales and the Peak District for steep ground and lead climbing experience. We also have excellent access to a number of flat and white water venues in the South West including the rivers Dart, Tamar, Tavy and of course the sea! The relatively mild winters enjoyed by the South West create excellent conditions for training and teaching all year round. Our on-site swimming pool is also an ideal place to practice kayak rolling and prepare for the pool lifeguard qualification.
Our Students
Previous ISC students have come from a range of different backgrounds and we welcome applications from people of all ages. Our course is designed to equip you with the skills required to work as an outdoor instructor and we do not expect you to have any experience prior to joining the course – except for loads of enthusiasm about being outdoors! If you do have some experience or existing qualifications we are often able to adapt the course to make sure you continue to progress and reach your goals (for example completing your Summer ML Assessment if you already have your ML Training and the relevant experience).
Embarking on a new career, especially if it means a dramatic change in your current situation, can be daunting which is why we do everything we can to help you find employment in the outdoor industry after you complete the course.
The course is now registered for Enhanced Learning Credits Reg No 2068 for Military Resettlement.
We are also approved for Career Development Loans Reg No 11900. For information on financial assistance to support your learning, please visit www.direct.gov.uk/adultlearning or contact 0800 100 900.
Our Staff
All of our instructors are experienced professionals with high level qualifications in the different disciplines. They are full of enthusiasm and are committed to your development. To make sure you get the most out of the course, one of our instructors will become your mentor and regular meetings offer an opportunity for you to discuss your progression throughout the course.
