Potential outdoor instructors come to us for training because our Intensive Outdoor Skills Course is designed to give you experience and make you employable. This 16 week course is designed to develop your skills in a variety of outdoor and adventurous activities so that you can work towards National Governing Body qualifications in mountain leadership, canoeing/kayaking, and rock climbing.

The Outdoor Instructor Training Course – Hard Skills
We like to call our course the Intensive Skills Course (or ISC) because you will learn a lot about outdoor activities in a relatively short space of time. Throughout the course you will develop personal competency alongside instructing/coaching skills to make you a well rounded and highly employable outdoor instructor. The Outdoor Instructor Training Course – Soft Skills
Working as an outdoor instructor isn’t all about climbing hard routes and paddling challenging rivers, it’s about connecting with people through the outdoors. That is why the course aims to develop a range of soft skills, through practical sessions with real students, which will enable you to feel confident about working with groups. We will also cover some of the theory behind different learning and teaching styles to give you an insight into how they can affect your work as an instructor.
In addition, there will also be a series of lectures and other sessions to ensure that you are familiar with risk assessments, accident and incident forms, stores paperwork, Centre licensing and approval, the role of the Adventurous Activity Licensing Service, child protection and many other issues that are important when running and working in a busy outdoor centre.
